‘‘Duende’ describes the soul of flamenco; a timeless intoxication of sound, passion, and spirit. Paul offers performances that are Spanish inspired, fused with Jazz, Classical, and World Music. With his gregarious personality, exceptional musical gift and extensive knowledge, a great performance is assured.

Paul Gerard has been playing guitar professionally for over thirty years. Flamenco guitar became his passion after being introduced to the provocative rhythms by his mentor, Andalusian born Fernando Da Costa. Paul instantly realized that Flamenco would give him the breadth of expression that he had been seeking; from wild and passionate to intensely sensitive and dignified. It took Paul six months to convince Da Costa to teach him. Unbeknownst to Paul, this was the traditional approach to becoming an apprentice; persistence and passion being the main ingredients to becoming a Flamenco artist. As tradition had prescribed via his mentor, the internationally known flamenco guitarist Nino Ricardo, Costa demanded the total commitment from Paul. Upon acceptance, Fernando insisted that Paul sacrifice his well-established career as a successful jazz/blues performer. After letting go of over twenty years of a musical style and six years of rigorous study with Fernando, Paul Gerard emerged as a flamenco musician.

While Paul expresses the heart of the gypsy in the ethnic-fusion of the music’s evolution, this development has inspired Paul on his own journey, even past the arena of strictly ‘flamenco’. The passion that makes Spanish music so unique is currently blended with Paul’s Jazz/Blues past. Added into the mix is Paul’s Bachelor of Music in Composition, which extends his musical expression into new arrangements of classical pieces as well as his original work. Now Paul offers performances that are Spanish inspired, fused with Jazz, Classical, and World Music. With his gregarious personality, exceptional musical gift and extensive knowledge, a great performance is assured.
